Kathy: Did you know the government is going to be shut down?
Me: Whose government?
Kathy: Ours, I guess.
Me: Really? Why?
Kathy: I have no idea. I just saw it on CNN.com when I booted my computer. I guess I should read it.
This is what happens when I no longer have an extraordinarily long elevator ride, during which I can read the headlines each day.
